How Perry uses the Functional Movement System in his profession:
My mission is to get people out of pain and teach them how to prevent it from returning. To do that, I needed them to understand how and why they got pain in the first place. My program is based entirely on the premise of dysfunctional movement causing and driving chronic pain. I needed a system for determining a client’s likelihood of re-injury based on movement dysfunction. My discovery of the Functional Movement Systems FMS and SFMA was the answer. I use the Functional Movement Screen as the benchmark of releasing a client from therapy. Clients understand from the very first visit that the FMS will be the benchmark for improvement and completion of the prescribed therapeutic program. It has allowed me to establish successful networking relationships with fitness professionals who can work hand-in-hand with the client for long term lifestyle changes. The FMS allows us to communicate and speak the same language regarding what is in the best long term interest of the client. Our client’s see and feel the difference on pre/post SFMA assessments and FMS screenings. They move smarter, move better, and perform great in life. It is the best clinical and business investment I have made to establish Stop Chasing Pain as a unique place for healing. I always say, ‘life is a contact sport’, so you had better optimize function to maximize performance.
Why Perry recommends using FMS over other screening methods:
Einstein one said, “Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.” That is the essence of why I love the Functional Movement Screen. It is simple to use and reveals a high degree of valuable information regarding individual movement patterns. FMS is system for observing fundamental movement patterns that are part of everyday activities. When individuals are going to load up these patterns with weight, repetition, power, or speed I want to know it they are dysfunctional. I like the grading system of the FMS. It gives measureable feedback for performance and improvement. Is the score getting better or worse? Is the symmetry improving or worsening? The screen holds the client and the fitness professional accountable for program design. People like to have measurable feedback. Think about the weight scale. We gauge progress based on pounds lost or gained. The FMS is your ‘movement scale'.
Some Advice from Perry:
The FMS brings immense value to your program design, client interaction, corrective exercise strategy, and your business. Success in any business is directly related to the value you bring to the marketplace. What do you offer that can change another person’s life? What separates you from the competition? Why should a client choose to see you out of all the other professionals? The answer. Sharing your passion fitness and health and the value added services you provide to help someone improve their life. In order to change behavior you must first change perception. Getting into shape is a behavior. The FMS will help clients discover a new perception of how they move and how they are progressing. This new perception helps modify behavior to reach health and fitness goals. I can say without hesitation that the FMS is the best investment I have made for my business.
