Diaphragm Function and Movement Health

Written by Brett Jones Breathing

We can all agree breathing is necessary for life, but have you thought about how poor breathing mechanics can influence how we move?

When we think of breathing mechanics we must consider the diaphragm – not just the mechanical responsibility of moving air in and out, but the neurological and chemical responsibilities.  These three responsibilities of the diaphragm are crucial for proper movement and over all function of the body.

Listen in as Brett Jones discusses these three responsibilities of the diaphragm and gives suggestions on exercises to improve breathing.

Thanks for the great overview.  I treat patients with pelvic floor dysfunction and talk to my patients about their breathing all the time.  This brought up some great points and gave me more direction for cueing as well as ways to educate patients.

It really is amazing to see how well crocodile breathing can improve movement patterns before even getting into other corrective progressions. I always re-test immediately and usually see a positive change.
