This live workshop, filmed in HD video using four cameras, took place during Perform Better’s Long Beach pre-conference workshop, August 2011, and features Gray Cook assisted by Brett Jones. Their most recent DVDs, Kettlebells from the Ground Up, Kettlebells from the Center and Club Swinging Essentials, covered how to do specific exercises right. This one flips that idea and instead covers how to pick the right exercises. It's a comprehensive 4-disc DVD set that will fill in the blanks and answer your questions about using the Functional Movement Screen when working with your clients, athletes, and patients. Although different people have a variety of programming needs, we all require a baseline movement map to enhance safety and maximize results, and this workshop lays down that foundation.
A properly executed movement screen provides a unique perspective, and in this workshop Gray shows us how to use the basic technology as a tool to develop programming unique to each individual. But it’s much more than a movement screen discussion, because what Gray is best at is seeing how people move, how we learn to move, and how we re-learn movement. He’s gifted at explaining what most of us don’t even see, and you’ll find yourself pausing the video over and over to stop and ponder concepts that he makes sound obvious, but that you’ve never considered.
Only about a third of the room had been through the Functional Movement Screen workshop. You don't need to be FMS certified or even use the screens to benefit from this material. Certainly people who use the screens will get more practical use from the workshop, but Gray's off-the-cuff pearls and insights? Over and over I found myself stopping to think through these simple-sounding ideas.
I was at the live event, listened to the audio file, edited the text file and worked through the video seven or eight times, and each time I discovered something new, something I missed the other times or that had a deeper meaning as I got more familiar with the ideas. For many trainers, strength coaches, and medical professionals, this material could be the key to how you work with clients, patients, and athletes in the years to come.

So I guess it will be 2 years ago this summer when I had one of the biggest highlights of my professional career, at least in terms of recognition. At the Friday evening social at the Perform Better Summit, where I clearly remember wearing one of my Green Lantern t-shirts, Gray Cook arrived probably an hour or so into the event with a Fiji water in hand.
It was not a few minutes when he then told me that he had included me in the Expansion Team roster in Movement that was set to come out a few months later.
I’m still to this day beamingly proud when it is more like I that should be thanking the likes of Gray, Lee, and Coach Boyle and so many others that have allowed me a platform and the confidence to do what I do today.
So obviously I’m an FMS guy since being exposed to it when I was with the Sixers in 2005. I certainly hadn’t half the clue I have today in utilizing the FMS then; in fact I didn’t even screen the guys. Just ran the correctives as I saw fit.
And since then, the algorithm has probably changed 3 or 4 times, the SFMA has entered into the picture even though it is really the older brother of the FMS, and I’ve learned what I now know as dozens of methods.
I say methods as these are the exercises, the manual therapies, the tools that all live underneath the System of the FMS. It has become clearer as the recent messages have gotten louder, but the essence of the Functional Movement Screen is simply that it is one piece of the Functional Movement System on Screening, Testing, and Assessing. The FMS is the Screen. The Y-Balance is the Test, and the SFMA is the Assessment.
Watching this DVD from Gray’s Precon at the PB-Long Beach Summit left me pleased that the veterans of the system as well as the ardent naysayers can watch it unfold from tip to tip and see what the FM System is and what it isn’t.
Because in the end, it is far less restrictive than it appears, and whatever tools you have, however you train people all fit perfectly under this system. And you can use your own 7 moves if you want to.
It really irks me that so many people say they don’t like the FMS, it doesn’t tell you everything, the research says this, it doesn’t say that, when in the end, I think everybody really is using the Functional Movement System and maybe just crafting a different Screen, a different Test, or a different Assessment.
The struggle is more with that the message being one of restriction falling onto folks that are either not receptive to being told what not to do or simply a weaker standard for training, or even worse just jealous that somebody else came up with something so simple, so excellent, and is making a whole gang of money off it.
There’s no shame in hitching your wagon up to someone, especially when that someone is a genius, a clairvoyant, and an individual that will boost you up to the ledge or reach down to help you get over the wall.

Applying the FMS Model is a great DVD for anyone wanting to learn more about applications of how to use the FMS model in their profession. The DVD provides the actual workshop with presentation slides and demonstrations of the FMS screen, as well as analysis of the screen results.
Gray includes vital information on:
Understanding what the FMS scores mean for the particular individual
- Individuals activities/sports/work
- Limitations/Injury History
- How to remove negatives
- Applying proper correctives
- Programming for that particular individual (provides great examples: weightlifter, runner, kettlebell enthusiast, older individual +50, younger individual -25, and an ex-athlete)
This is some pretty fantastic stuff as this type of material has not yet been covered in any other DVD or Workbook. This is one of the main reasons why Gray and Brett decided to do the workshop in the first place, to provide a demonstration to interested people and to provide both FMS Certified and Non-FMS Certified individuals an understanding of application.
On Target Publications did a fantastic job with this DVD. It includes everything. The PDF of the presentation slides, charts, scoring criteria and verbal instructions for the FMS, as well as a full MP3 of the lecture so you can listen off of your ipod or even in the car. LOVE THAT!
In the workshop Gray does a fantastic job of explaining the finer points of why it is important to have a movement screen for any active individual. These points can be used by the FMS professional towards convincing the importance of using the FMS in many different domains (Examples: sports teams, gyms, bootcamps, risk management for different active careers and etc.)
This DVD and workbook can be used in so many different ways:
- Provide the Certified FMS Professional a valuable resource tool to enhance their current practice
- Provide professionals who are interested in getting FMS certified a taste of everything the FMS entails
- Provides all professionals a tool to present to their superiors, co-workers, and/or potential clients (examples: head coaches, athletic directors, strength coaches, athletic trainers, wellness coordinators, corporate wellness committees and etc.) which gives a vivid explanation of the whole FMS process and its applications and benefits. Use this in your arsenal when you are trying to establish its importance within your setting. How nice is it to ask someone to watch this video when they are interested in learning more about the FMS and its benefits?
